Christmas Markets 2025: Concerns Over Safety Persist Among Germans
Recent surveys indicate a important portion of the German population harbors concerns about safety when visiting Christmas markets. A Yougov poll conducted for the German Press Agency (dpa) revealed that 22 percent of German citizens answered “yes, very much” when asked if they were worried about visiting a Christmas market, while an additional 40 percent answered “yes, somewhat.” Conversely, 35 percent reported having no worries about attending the festive events.
Despite thes anxieties, 59 percent of those surveyed are still planning to visit Christmas markets this year. However, 33 percent have decided against attending. among those not planning to go,the primary reasons cited were high prices for food,drinks,and goods (53 percent),large crowds (50 percent),lack of interest (36 percent),and security concerns (32 percent).
Cities and market operators are implementing extensive security measures in response to these concerns and ongoing assessments of potential threats. Common precautions include barriers to prevent vehicle access, increased police patrols, and the presence of private security personnel. A nationwide ban on knives at Christmas markets has been in affect since 2024.
Public opinion regarding the adequacy of these measures is divided. While 41 percent believe the security precautions are sufficient, 37 percent feel they are not, wiht the remaining respondents expressing no opinion.
Authorities continue to emphasize the ongoing risk of attacks. The police union has described the security situation in Germany as tense, noting a general increase in public uncertainty alongside a desire for events and increased police presence. Organizers acknowledge a direct correlation between market size and the need for robust security measures.

The 2024 Magdeburg Christmas market attack, in which a driver injured over 300 and killed six, including a nine-year-old child, underscores the continued need for vigilance.
