Giessen, Germany – A vehicle drove through a blockade during a protest Saturday in Giessen, Germany, as a new AfD youth organization held a founding meeting.
Footage posted by AfD Berlin shows the car following an ambulance. Demonstrators reportedly drummed on the vehicle’s hood and ran after it,resulting in a broken rear window.
A police spokesperson for Central hesse stated no organized convoys where known to be in the area at the time. An incident involving a broken rear window was reported around 9 a.m. in Lahnau-Atzbach, and police are examining video footage.
The incident occurred amidst broader demonstrations during the AfD youth meeting, which resulted in injuries. Ten police officers sustained minor injuries, and preliminary reports indicate 26 demonstrators were injured.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, speaking at a CDU state party conference in Leipzig, emphasized the right to demonstrate while also expressing concern over violence, stating, “Demonstrating is a essential right… Gathering is also a fundamental right… but I have the greatest respect for the police officers on duty when I see how masked people… approach the police with a willingness to use violence.”
