PS Portal May Soon Stream Games Directly From the PS Store, New Rumors suggest
A potential update to the PlayStation Portal could allow users to stream games purchased directly from the PS Store, even without a PS5 console powered on. The rumour, originating from discussions on Reddit and Resetera, centres around wording in recent PlayStation documentation detailing the ability to stream games directly to the PS5 via PS Plus Premium, and to the PS Portal from the PS Plus Game Catalog. This has led to speculation Sony is preparing to expand streaming capabilities to include owned, digital-only titles.
Currently, the PS Portal requires a PS5 to stream games. If the rumour proves true, it would substantially enhance the handheld’s functionality, effectively turning it into a standalone cloud gaming device for PS5 titles. This progress aligns with Sony’s ongoing investment in cloud streaming technology, which the company is steadily improving rather than aggressively pushing.
The quality of the streaming experience will vary depending on internet connection, but Sony’s current streaming solution has been described as ”surprisingly competent.”
