Polestar 3 Owners in California Can Now Power Homes with Vehicle-to-Home Technology

California – Polestar 3 owners in California can now utilize their electric vehicles to power their homes, thanks to a new partnership with home energy company dcbel and a California energy Commission program. The feature, known as Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) charging, allows Polestar 3 customers with the 400 Volt electrical architecture to send energy from their car battery back to their residence, providing backup power and perhaps lowering energy costs.

This growth marks a significant step towards greater energy independence for EV owners and increased grid resilience. As climate change drives more frequent and intense power outages, and as consumers seek ways to reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills, V2H technology is gaining traction.Polestar’s implementation uses direct current and, through dcbel’s Ara system, promises to reduce charging costs by up to $1,300 annually and provide up to 10 days of backup power during blackouts.

The V2H functionality is enabled through the installation of a “home energy station” administered by dcbel, which manages multiple clean energy sources, including EVs.Polestar customers can apply for rebates on these stations through dcbel’s website.

Polestar isn’t the first automaker to offer this capability; ford’s F-150 lightning, GM’s EV lineup, and the third-generation Nissan Leaf also feature bi-directional charging. Polestar already offers bi-directional charging in Germany via a home charger developed with Zaptec and plans to expand the availability of the feature in the future.
