At least one person is dead and six others wounded following a shooting at a welcome week party at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania late Saturday night, authorities said.The incident occurred as students where gathered for an event marking the start of the academic year.
lincoln University, located approximately 88 miles west of Philadelphia, is the nation’s first degree-granting historically Black university. The shooting raises concerns about safety on college campuses, notably at HBCUs, and comes just days after a similar incident near Howard University in washington D.C. Investigations are underway, and counseling services are being offered to the Lincoln University community.
University officials confirmed the shooting in a statement released Sunday morning, adding that counseling would be available starting that morning for anyone affected. The university has not yet released details about the victim who died or the conditions of those wounded.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he had been briefed on the shooting and pledged his administration’s full support to the university and local law enforcement. “Please join Lori and me in praying for the Lincoln University community,” Shapiro said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The shooting at Lincoln University follows an incident Friday in which five people were wounded near the campus of Howard University as the institution began its homecoming activities. Police reported that none of the victims in the howard University shooting were students.
