New York Governor Declares Emergency as Federal Food Aid Faces Collapse
New York, NY – October 30, 2025 – New York Governor Kathy hochul has declared a state of emergency, authorizing $65 million in state funds to bolster food banks as a critical federal food assistance program faces imminent disruption. The move comes amid a deepening budget impasse in Congress threatening the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food security for approximately 42 million Americans.
The potential lapse in SNAP funding, slated to occur november 1st, represents the first shutdown in the program’s 60-year history due to a government funding dispute. This assistance is a lifeline for individuals and families earning below 130 percent of the federal poverty line, often representing their primary source of food. The nationwide impact would be ample, leaving millions vulnerable to food insecurity.
Governor Hochul’s declaration will expedite the delivery of resources to food collection centers and distribution points across New York State. “this will free up $65 million for food collection centers to be delivered to distribution points for those in need,” she stated.
New York is not alone in proactively addressing the crisis. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has also issued a state of emergency, committing $5 million to support food banks within her state. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin intends to utilize state budget surpluses to maintain aid levels for up to one month.
currently, Congress and the governance have not reached an agreement to ensure the continuation of SNAP benefits, which total approximately $8 billion per month nationally. The program’s future remains uncertain as negotiations continue.
