Google’s Gemini 3 Pro Outperforms GPT-4, Signaling new AI Capabilities
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – December 13, 2023 - Google today announced Gemini 3 Pro, its most capable model yet, demonstrating superior performance to OpenAI’s GPT-4 on a range of benchmarks and signaling a potential shift in teh competitive landscape of large language models. The new model is available now to Gemini Advanced subscribers and through the Google AI Studio and Vertex AI platforms.
The release comes as public trust in AI remains fractured, particularly among lower-income individuals who fear being “left out and left behind” by the technology’s rapid advancement, according to a recent Edelman survey. While younger demographics (62% of 18-34 year olds globally) generally trust AI, that figure drops to 40% in the U.S., highlighting concerns about data privacy and potential manipulation. Gemini 3 Pro’s arrival intensifies the debate around equitable access and responsible AI development, as more powerful models become available.
Gemini 3 Pro excels in complex reasoning tasks, outperforming GPT-4 on the MMLU (massive multitask language understanding) benchmark, achieving 90.0% versus GPT-4’s 86.4%. Google also reports Gemini 3 pro surpasses GPT-4 in reasoning, math, and coding capabilities. The model is designed to handle a wider range of prompts and instructions, offering improved accuracy and nuanced responses.
The Edelman survey also revealed a disparity in AI tool usage at work, with only 25% of non-managers utilizing AI weekly compared to 63% of managers. Tech (55%) and finance (43%) sectors show the highest adoption rates, while healthcare (28%),education (25%),food & beverage (23%),and transportation (20%) lag behind. Gemini 3 Pro’s accessibility through Google’s platforms could possibly broaden AI adoption across these industries.
Google is offering Gemini 3 Pro in multiple sizes, including Nano, Pro, and Ultra, catering to diverse needs and computational constraints.Gemini Nano is designed for on-device tasks, Pro powers experiences like Gemini Advanced, and Ultra, the largest and most capable model, is currently in early testing.
