flu & COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign Underway in France, Authorities Urge Increased Uptake
Paris, France – French health authorities are encouraging widespread vaccination against both influenza and COVID-19 as the seasonal flu circulates and winter approaches.While initial vaccination rates are promising, officials caution it’s too early to assess the overall success of the campaign, particularly following lower uptake in recent years.
The vaccination campaign utilizes various vaccine options, including Efluelda® and fluad® trivalent vaccines specifically indicated for individuals over 65 years of age. Other vaccines are approved for use in children from six months and adults. Importantly, individuals can receive both a flu and COVID-19 vaccine on the same day, administered in separate arms.
Health Insurance covers 100% of the vaccine cost for at-risk populations, which include:
* People aged 65 and over.
* Individuals under 65 with chronic illnesses, including children aged 6 months and older.
* Pregnant women.
* People with obesity (BMI ≥ 40).
* Residents of follow-up and medico-social care facilities.
Vaccination is also recommended for healthcare professionals, those in close contact with at-risk individuals, caregivers of infants under six months and immunocompromised people, home help providers for vulnerable individuals, cruise ship and airplane cabin crew, travel industry personnel, and professionals exposed to swine and avian influenza viruses.
The seasonal flu vaccine is also available to children aged 2 to 17 without chronic illnesses, covered at 65%.
Alongside vaccination, public health officials are reinforcing the importance of preventative measures, including wearing masks at the first sign of symptoms, frequent and proper handwashing, and regular ventilation of indoor spaces.
The flu is a possibly serious contagious disease that can lead to complications such as cardiac issues, lung infections, and exacerbation of existing chronic conditions.
