Cologne police have arrested a 22-year-old man of Algerian origin in connection with a rape that occurred on Ebertplatz earlier this week. The suspect was apprehended at the Cologne hauptbahnhof following a swift response triggered by a witness.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight, when the victim-a young woman visiting from the Oberpfalz region of Germany-was allegedly forced behind a container on Ebertplatz and subjected to sexual assault. Police were alerted by a bystander who observed the attack and promptly contacted authorities.Video surveillance from the Ebertplatz security system aided officers in locating and detaining the suspect.
Investigators have confirmed that the alleged perpetrator is already known to police, with numerous prior legal proceedings pending, primarily related to property crimes.His current residency status in Cologne remains under investigation. He was presented before a judge on September 25th and is now in pre-trial detention.
