California’s Proposition 50 Passes, Boosting Democrats and Drawing Sharp Criticism from Trump
sacramento, California – California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 50 on November 5, 2025, a measure impacting the state’s redistricting process. The proposition passed by a two-to-one margin, delivering a critically important victory to Democratic Governor Gavin newsom and potentially bolstering the party’s chances of gaining control of the US Congress in the upcoming elections, and thus challenging former President Donald Trump’s political agenda.
The approval of Proposition 50 could result in Democrats gaining as many as five additional seats in the House of Representatives. This potential gain is seen as a counter to the five seats Texas Republicans are aiming to secure through thier own redistricting efforts, encouraged by Trump.Republicans also anticipate picking up one seat each from new maps in Missouri and North Carolina, and potentially two more in Ohio.
Trump reacted strongly to the outcome, taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, to denounce the vote. He claimed the process was “RIGGED” and “unconstitutional,” specifically questioning the validity of the voting itself.
Newsom swiftly responded, dismissing trump’s claims as the “ramblings of an old man that knows he’s about to LOSE.” He celebrated the victory on X (formerly Twitter), stating that California voters had sent a “powerful message” to trump. He posted, “Tonight, California sent a powerful message to Donald Trump. We will fight for our democracy. And we will win.” [See Tweet embedded below]

The newly drawn district boundaries will be in effect for the 2026,2028,and 2030 elections. Traditionally, these boundaries are steadfast by an independent commission following each decennial national census to reflect population shifts.Though, the reality frequently enough sees the parties in power influencing the process.
The revised districts are designed to diminish the voting power of Republican voters. One example cited is the consolidation of rural, conservative areas of northern California with Marin County, a traditionally liberal region located across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.
Newsom framed the campaign as a broader defense of democracy against Trump’s efforts to undermine it. A televised advertisement depicted a frustrated Trump reacting to the results by throwing French fries at a television.
Former President Barack obama also lent his support, appearing in an advertisement stating, “Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield unchecked power for two more years. You can stop Republicans in their tracks.”
Though, the proposition faced criticism from those who argued that responding to perceived partisan maneuvers with similar tactics is counterproductive. Opponents urged Californians to reject what they characterized as a Democratic power grab, even if they disagreed with Trump’s actions in Republican-led states.
Among the most vocal critics was Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former Republican governor who oversaw the creation of the independent redistricting commission through measures approved in 2008 and 2010.Schwarzenegger argued that Proposition 50 would “take the power away from the people.”
