Affan, a food delivery driver who was not participating in the protests, was fatally struck by the vehicle on August 28, 2025, in the Penjimnihan area of Pejompongan, Central Jakarta. His death ignited a wave of demonstrations demanding justice and broader governmental reform, escalating into clashes with authorities and acts of vandalism targeting the homes of members of the DPR and Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani. The unrest resulted in ten fatalities and over 1,000 arrests, with some detainees afterward released.
“The disciplinary action taken against Bripka Rohmat reflects the seriousness with which the National Police views this incident,” stated Setiawan. “Dismissal was not respectfully considered as a member of the National Police.”
The protests centered on calls for justice for Affan and extensive reforms within the DPR and the government. The KKEP’s decision marks a significant step in addressing the fallout from the incident, though further legal proceedings may follow. The seven-year demotion will impact Bripka Rohmat’s career progression and standing within the National Police force.
