Prolonged Air Conditioning Use Linked to increased Health Risks, Experts Warn
BANGKOK – Extended exposure to air-conditioned environments, even for durations as short as six hours, can significantly elevate the risk of respiratory infections, skin and eye problems, and perhaps compromise immune function, according to health professionals. While not a definitive scientific conclusion, growing awareness of these long-term impacts is prompting calls for cautious air conditioner use and regular maintenance.
Individuals frequently spending time in air-conditioned rooms face a heightened susceptibility to respiratory infections like influenza, common colds, nasal congestion, and, in severe cases, pneumonia. A key factor is the stark temperature difference between indoor and outdoor environments; a variance exceeding 10 degrees Celsius can hinder the body’s ability to adapt, weakening immunity and increasing vulnerability to viral and bacterial infections.
Moreover, air conditioners dehumidify the air, leading to dryness that can exacerbate respiratory issues. Coupled with the practice of keeping windows closed, this creates an habitat conducive to germ accumulation.
Beyond respiratory concerns, prolonged air conditioning use is associated with dermatological and ocular problems. Common complaints include dry skin, itching, allergic rashes, eczema, burning eyes, dry eyes, and irritation.Chronic allergic reactions – manifesting as sneezing, runny noses, difficulty breathing, or skin rashes – may also develop or worsen with extended exposure.
To mitigate these risks, experts recommend the following preventative measures:
Regular Air Conditioner Cleaning: Units should be thoroughly cleaned at least annually, ideally before the onset of summer, with particular attention paid to filters and cooling panels.
Appropriate Temperature Settings: Maintain indoor temperatures between 26-28 degrees Celsius, ensuring a difference of no more than 5-8 degrees Celsius from the outside temperature.
Airflow Direction: Adjust air vents to direct airflow upwards, allowing for broader circulation and avoiding direct exposure to sensitive areas like the head, neck, and waist.
Periodic Ventilation: Regularly open windows to facilitate air exchange and reduce the concentration of airborne germs.
Health officials emphasize that while air conditioning provides comfort during hot weather, improper use or inadequate maintenance can pose a “silent danger” to health. Individuals are urged to heed bodily warning signs and prioritize consistent air conditioner maintenance to ensure safe and healthy usage.
