The IOC handed Los Angeles the Olympics. Trump is weaponizing them | LA Olympic Games 2028

Los Angeles Olympics Face Rising Hurdles

With political tensions and logistical challenges, the 2028 Summer Games face an uncertain path.

Los Angeles was awarded the 2028 Summer Olympics back in 2017, a decision hailed as a “golden opportunity.” But circumstances have drastically changed, casting a shadow over the event. Deadly wildfires, a city budget crisis, and a divisive political climate threaten to derail the Games.

Olympic Foundation Crumbles

Once lauded for its “strong foundation,” Los Angeles now grapples with significant issues. The city faces a budget shortfall that could impact its ability to effectively host the Olympics. The return of **Donald Trump** to the White House adds another layer of complexity.

Trump’s Promises and Potential Pitfalls

Just prior to his inauguration, **Trump** reportedly told **Casey Wasserman**, chair of the LA28 Olympic Organizing Committee, “These are America’s Olympics…I’m going to be supportive in every way possible and make them the greatest Games.” However, **Trump**’s unpredictable nature raises concerns about his commitment.

While **Wasserman** has insisted that America will be open to all 209 countries, **Trump**’s history suggests otherwise. His administration is known for using sports for self-aggrandizement and to deflect from domestic issues.

Political Interference Looms

The relationship between the **Trump** administration and California’s leaders could further complicate matters. Vice-president **JD Vance** has already criticized the state’s handling of ICE enforcement, signaling a potential for conflict.

Olympic organizers are seeking $3.2 billion in federal funding for transportation infrastructure. However, threats to cut off funding to cities with anti-ICE protests add more uncertainty.

The National Special Security Event Designation

A key factor influencing the Games is the National Special Security Event (NSSE) designation. This gives federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, broad authority.

Then-president **Joe Biden** designated the LA28 Olympics an NSSE back in 2024. According to the U.S. Secret Service, NSSE designations allow for coordinated planning between local, state, and federal agencies.

With an estimated 900,000 undocumented people residing in Los Angeles, the NSSE status raises concerns about potential crackdowns and increased security measures.

Secrecy and Policing

The NSSE designation also enables secrecy. When council member **Imelda Padilla** questioned Los Angeles Police Department chief **Jim McDonnell** about potential warnings regarding federal immigration raids, his response was alarming.

**McDonnell** stated, “You’re asking me to warn you about an enforcement action being taken by another agency before it happens? We can’t do that…That would be completely inappropriate and illegal.”

He added, “All of the crimes we investigate potentially could be in partnership with [federal agencies]…It is a partnership, and without that partnership, we wouldn’t be able to go into the World Cup, the Olympics … that require that we work with federal, state and local partners.”

Travel Bans and Visa Denials

The **Trump** administration’s plans to institute a new travel ban, potentially affecting 48 countries, pose another challenge. Every nation on **Trump**’s list sent athletes to the Paris 2024 Games. Furthermore, visa denials have already impacted international sports teams, such as Senegal’s women’s basketball team.

Coventry’s Challenge

**Kirsty Coventry**, the new IOC president, faces the difficult task of navigating these challenges. The Olympic Charter explicitly opposes discrimination. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the IOC has the authority to ensure the Games are held in a way that respects the organization’s principles.

Will **Coventry** confront **Trump** and uphold these principles? Her actions will define her leadership and determine the future of the Olympic spirit in Los Angeles.
