Nadal Open to Federer Exhibition, But Sets Timeline for Return
Manacor, Spain - November 21, 2023 – Rafael Nadal has indicated openness to a potential exhibition tour with Roger Federer, but cautioned that both players need adequate preparation before returning to competitive play. The comments, made following Federer’s expressed interest in the possibility, suggest a future encounter isn’t off the table, though it won’t be immediate.
Nadal, recently honored with the AS Legend Award 2025, acknowledged a strong relationship with Federer and believes an chance will eventually arise. “It’s possible. You never know,” nadal stated, adding, “I have a great relationship with Roger; we talk regularly. I think eventually there will be an opportunity.” Though, he emphasized the need for sufficient training given both players’ recent time away from the court.
Federer, in a November 19th interview with the Daily Gazette, alluded to “some great things that could come” from a joint exhibition. Nadal confirmed he’s only managed 45 minutes of play on two separate days in the past year, while Federer appears further along in his preparation, with plans for competition as early as January.
“To get back on court without it being a disaster would take me some time,” Nadal explained. He also stated, “I already said in our last conversation that if something needs to be done, he should let me know a little in advance. I shouldn’t make a fool of myself on the track. If the opportunity presents itself, let’s make it something fun for both of us, something good.”
