Television Guitarist Richard Lloyd Diagnosed With Rare Bile Duct Cancer

August 24, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Television co-founding guitarist Richard Lloyd was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare and intense form of bile duct cancer, in March, according to details shared by bandmate Sean Seymour via a GoFundMe campaign. Lloyd, 74, faces severe medical and financial strain as mounting treatment costs collide with an inability to tour.

Cholangiocarcinoma Diagnosis and Severe Medical Complications

According to updates provided on the fundraising page and covered by Rolling Stone, Lloyd has tumors in his liver, including one located dangerously close to a major blood vessel. Because of this placement, doctors cannot safely perform operations to remove the growth at this time. The musician has endured seven intensive care unit stays since his diagnosis, which included two bouts of sepsis alongside complications affecting his kidneys and liver.

Despite the severity of the illness, Lloyd offered a direct statement regarding his condition. “I am usually a pretty upbeat person and I am taking this in stride, but it has become very difficult on our own and financially we are strapped,” Lloyd wrote. His wife, Sheila O’Keefe, has stepped away from her job to serve as his full-time caregiver, compounding the household’s financial pressure.

Touring Income Loss and Unresolved Royalties

For a working musician, the inability to perform live acts as a severe economic blow. Compounding the lost performance revenue, Seymour pointed to unresolved royalty issues spanning roughly two years that have further strained the family’s resources.

The Legacy of Television and Industry Support

Formed in New York City in 1973, Television became a driving force behind the transformation of CBGB into the defining club of New York City’s 1970s punk scene alongside contemporaries like the Ramones and the Patti Smith Group. Lloyd’s intricate electric guitar interplay with Tom Verlaine defined the band’s 1977 debut record, Marquee Moon, widely considered one of the best punk albums of all time. Following the death of Verlaine in 2023 and bassist Fred Smith in February, Lloyd maintained an active career as a solo artist.

The campaign launched by Seymour seeks to raise $80,000 to cover mounting medical bills and basic monthly living expenses. As of Aug. 24, donations have reached approximately $48,000. Prominent figures within the music community have contributed to the fund, including Patti Smith, who donated $5,000 in gratitude for Lloyd’s musical contributions. Additional donations have arrived from Kathy Valentine of The Go-Go’s, Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes, and Susan Tweedy, wife of Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy.
