Tamron has announced the 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD, a new standard zoom lens for both Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount cameras, slated for release on March 26, 2026, with a price of $899.
The lens is positioned as a compact, high-end optic particularly suited for portrait photography, according to announcements made by both Tamron and B&H Photo Video. It represents a deliberate design choice by Tamron to offer alternatives to more conventional focal length combinations, a strategy the company has pursued with previous lenses like the 28-75mm and 70-180mm f/2.8 models.
This new 35-100mm lens builds on the success of Tamron’s earlier 35-150mm f/2-2.8, which proved popular as an event lens despite its weight and size. The 35-100mm aims to replicate the versatility of its predecessor while addressing concerns about bulk. It achieves a similar compactness to the 28-75mm f/2.8, utilizing the same 67mm filter threads and comparable overall dimensions, weighing in at 19.9 ounces (565 grams).
Tamron’s approach to focal lengths is notable within the industry, as evidenced by the company’s history of deviating from standard zoom ranges. A similar 35-105mm f/2.8 lens was offered in the 1990s, though it did not inspire widespread adoption by other manufacturers. The current iteration features a custom button with three configurable settings, enhancing handling versatility. The lens likewise incorporates a smoothly operating manual focus ring and aperture ring, alongside build quality that has become a hallmark of Tamron’s designs.
The lens’s development reflects Tamron’s continued focus on providing unique options for photographers, particularly those seeking a balance between a versatile focal range and a manageable size. The 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is currently available for pre-order through B&H Photo Video and KEH.com.
