T20 World Cup: Zimbabwe Through, Australia Eliminated After Rain Washes Out Ireland Match

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment on Tuesday as a rain-affected match between Zimbabwe and Ireland confirmed their elimination, while simultaneously securing Zimbabwe’s progression to the Super Eight stage.

Persistent rain at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Sri Lanka forced the abandonment of the Zimbabwe-Ireland contest, awarding each team a point. This result elevated Zimbabwe to five points in Group B, guaranteeing them a place in the next round alongside Sri Lanka, who had already qualified after defeating Australia on Monday.

The washout effectively ended any lingering hopes for Mitchell Marsh’s Australian side, who had begun their tournament with a 67-run victory over Ireland but then suffered a 23-run defeat to Zimbabwe last Friday. That loss against Zimbabwe, repeating a result from the inaugural tournament in 2007, proved pivotal, leaving Australia needing a series of unlikely outcomes to remain in contention.

Australia needed Zimbabwe to lose both of their remaining matches – against Ireland and Sri Lanka – and then to defeat Oman in their final group stage game, while as well significantly improving their net run-rate. However, the point earned by Zimbabwe against Ireland rendered those calculations irrelevant.

Sri Lanka sealed their Super Eight spot with an eight-wicket victory over Australia on Monday, a match in which Pathum Nissanka scored a century off 52 balls. Australia posted 181 all out in their innings, with Mitchell Marsh scoring 54 off 27 balls and Travis Head contributing 56 off 29, but Sri Lanka reached their target of 182 in 18 overs, with Nissanka remaining unbeaten on 100.

Zimbabwe’s qualification marks a historic moment for the team, having previously reached the Super 12 stage in 2022. Their match against Sri Lanka on Thursday will determine the Group B winner. Australia’s final match against Oman on Friday is now a dead rubber.

The Australian team, crowned T20 World Cup champions in 2021, have struggled in this tournament, and their early exit represents a significant setback. The team’s performance has been particularly scrutinized given the absence of several senior players.
