Syria Extends 15-Day Ceasefire with Kurdish Forces to Transfer IS Detainees to Iraq

RAQQA, Syria — Hours after a four-day truce between the Syrian government and Kurdish-led fighters expired Saturday, Syria’s defense ministry announced a 15-day extension.

The ministry stated the extension supports a U.S. operation to transfer Islamic State militants held in northeastern Syria to detention centers in iraq.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces confirmed the ceasefire extension.

“Our forces affirm their commitment to the agreement and dedication to respecting it, contributing to de-escalation, civilian protection, and stability,” the group said.

Over the past weeks, clashes between Syrian government forces and Kurdish fighters have intensified, raising concerns about the stability of the region and possibly disrupting efforts to combat remaining Islamic State cells.

The initial truce aimed to allow the transfer of militants without further conflict. The extension suggests continued cooperation, at least for now, between the Syrian government, the U.S.-led coalition, and the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The situation remains fluid, and the long-term implications of the truce extension are still unclear. Though, it represents a temporary reprieve from escalating violence in northeastern Syria.
