Glenn Gary Cameron Pleads Guilty to Decades-Old Sexual Assaults
Glenn Gary Cameron has pleaded guilty to 24 charges relating to a series of sexual assaults committed in Sydney during the 1990s. The attacks targeted eight women in the Moore Park and inner west areas.
The assaults began with escalating attacks, culminating in a notably violent incident two weeks into the spree. On this occasion, cameron, armed with a 20-centimetre knife, repeatedly raped a woman at Moore Park over a half-hour period. In the four subsequent attacks, Cameron used a knife to rape and attempt to rape victims, also forcing them to endure degrading acts.
One victim,a 24-year-old walking home from a Surry Hills pub to Redfern, was initially approached by Cameron under the guise of being an art student seeking a model. He complimented her appearance and asked if she would pose for him. When she began to walk away, Cameron grabbed her shorts, threatened her with a knife, and forced her to Moore Park Golf Course, where he committed the assault.
Cameron’s identity remained concealed for three months due to a suppression order, which was lifted in May of the previous year.
Details revealed in court outline a complex personal history. Cameron was raised by his maternal grandmother following the early death of his mother and having never known his father. He attended public schools in Merrylands and Parramatta before a brief stint in the Army, ending with a discharge after one year due to drug use. He had two children with a partner he met in 1980, before they separated.
Throughout the 1990s, Cameron worked in various caring roles, including as a carer and wardsman in hospitals and aged care facilities. He also held jobs at a Newtown funeral parlour and a sex shop. He married his first wife, who had recently immigrated from Taiwan, and they had two children before he abandoned the family.
Cameron reported remaining addicted to drugs until 2008, when he met his current wife, who had recently moved to Australia from Thailand. He credited her with helping him overcome his addiction. In 2012, he secured a position as a funeral director in Alice Springs, where he lived with his wife until his arrest.
The examination into the cold case was reopened in 2022 by the sex crimes squad, focusing on DNA evidence linked to the assaults. Analysis determined a common male DNA profile connected four of the victims. A familial DNA search led investigators to Cameron’s daughter, and subsequently to Cameron himself through hospital records.
Police learned Cameron and his wife were planning to travel from Alice Springs to thailand via Sydney. A covert operation at Sydney Airport resulted in the collection of a schooner glass and fork used by Cameron, which provided a DNA match to evidence found at a hotel he had previously stayed in.
Cameron was arrested on February 29, 2024, upon his return to Sydney from thailand. He denied the assaults, stating he had “never hurt anyone.”
Cameron is scheduled to reappear in court on October 24.
