Healthy weight is determined based on height, age and fat percentage
Contrary to the common belief that there is one ideal weight that applies to everyone, a recent study confirmed that healthy weight depends on multiple factors that exceed the numbers that are abstract on the scale.
BMI does not differentiate between muscle and fat mass
The study, published in the American National Library of Medicine, stated that a healthy weight is determined based on height, age, gender and the percentage of fat in the body.
For his part, the clinical nutritionist at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Stephen Javitis, that the body mass index has no fixed equation, but rather depends on many factors, not only weight and height.
Although the body mass index is commonly used, it does not always reflect the healthy reality of the individual, it does not differentiate between the mass of muscles and fats, and does not explain the distribution of fat in the body; Which makes it inaccurate in some cases, and the usual classifications of the body mass index begin from 18.5 and reach 30 and more, but these numbers alone are not enough to assess human health.
The study indicated that age does not change the body mass index directly, but health habits change with age and affect public health. Instead of overall dependence on the body mass index, measurements such as waist circumference and body fat percentage are more accurate in providing a comprehensive healthy evaluation, as it better reflects the distribution of fats and associated health risks.
It should also be taken into account that body structures differ between different races; This requires caution when explaining the body mass index.
