Starlink Suffers Widespread Outage, Affecting Millions globally

Starlink, the satellite internet service provider, is currently experiencing a meaningful global outage, with reports of service disruptions flooding in from users across Europe, North America, and Asia. The scale of the problem is underscored by the sheer volume of user reports, with Downdetector registering over 55,000 reports within mere tens of minutes – a figure far exceeding typical outages even for major web services.The widespread nature of the disruption is evident in user feedback from various regions. Reports indicate unavailability of the internet service in the Netherlands,Italy,and the Czech Republic,with one user from the USA describing it as a “total collapse” and an unprecedented outage for the network. Starlink boasts over six million users worldwide, with approximately two million in the United States.

The implications of this outage extend to critical operations, notably for the Ukrainian army. Unian server reported on Thursday evening that “satellite communication on the whole front stopped working,” highlighting the vital role Starlink plays in military communications.

The cause of the widespread service interruption remains unclear, with speculation ranging from technical malfunctions to a potential cyberattack. starlink representatives acknowledged the issue on Network X,stating,”Starlink is currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing a solution. We appreciate your patience, we’ll share an update once this issue is resolved.” As of now, there is no definitive timeline for the restoration of full service.
