Spotify is introducing measures to label music created with artificial intelligence, aiming to combat deceptive practices as payouts to artists surge. The platform will require artists and rights holders to disclose the extent of AI involvement-in vocals, instrumentation, or post-production-without penalizing responsible AI use or altering content promotion.
The initiative responds to a tenfold increase in Spotify payouts, from $1 billion in 2014 to $10 billion in 2024, which has attracted malicious actors attempting to exploit the system through spam and fabricated content. Spotify asserts a nuanced approach is needed, focusing on transparency to “fight supplant, spam and deception” rather than a rigid “AI” or “not AI” classification for each song. The goal is to maintain industry integrity while acknowledging the growing role of AI in music creation.
