Spotify Elevates Premium Tier with Lossless Audio Launch
Stockholm, Sweden – September 10, 2025 – Spotify today announced the rollout of its long-awaited lossless audio feature, offering premium subscribers access to music in FLAC format at no extra cost. The update began in twelve markets - the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Japan, denmark, Austria, New Zealand, Netherlands, Australia, Portugal, and the Czech Republic – with plans for expansion to over 50 markets throughout October.
This enhancement marks a notable step in the ongoing streaming quality war, directly addressing years of requests from audiophile users. Spotify’s lossless audio streams at up to 24-bit/44.1kHz, matching CD quality and exceeding the fidelity of standard MP3s. The move aims to solidify Spotify’s position against competitors offering similar high-fidelity options and attract users prioritizing superior sound.
The lossless feature will be available across a wide range of devices, including mobile phones, computers, and tablets, as well as through Spotify Connect on compatible equipment from brands like Sony, Bose, samsung, and sennheiser.
Spotify recommends using wired headphones or speakers to fully experience the benefits of lossless audio, as Bluetooth connections can limit overall audio quality. Compatibility with Sonos and Amazon devices is slated for release in October.
“We are thrilled that lossless sound is reaching premium subscribers,” stated Gustav Gyllenhammar, Spotify’s Vice President of Subscriptions. “This feature was designed with quality, ease of use, and clarity in mind, to offer an optimized experience for those who value sound fidelity.”
The launch of lossless audio builds on Spotify’s recent premium feature additions, including DJ, Jam, AI Playlist, and Mix, demonstrating a continued commitment to enhancing the value proposition of its subscription service and catering to a diverse range of listener preferences.
