south Africa Women emphatically defeated Ireland Women by 105 runs in their opening Twenty20 International in Cape Town, launching their series with a dominant performance. The victory underscores South Africa’s strength as they continue their campaign following a strong showing as runners-up in the recent Women’s World Cup.
Captain laura Wolvaardt spearheaded the South African innings, blazing an incredible 115 not out off just 52 balls – the seventh-fastest century in Women’s T20 International history, punctuated by 15 fours and four sixes. Her outstanding knock, combined with Sune Luus‘ contribution of 81 runs, propelled the hosts to a challenging total of 220/3.
Ireland’s chase got off to a disastrous start, losing both Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast within the first over. Despite a brief resistance from captain Gaby Lewis (30) and Leah Paul (34),the Irish side struggled to build momentum and were ultimately bowled out for 115 in 18 overs. Sune Luus proved instrumental with the ball, claiming four wickets for South Africa.
Earlier, Ireland’s Jane Maguire had struck early, dismissing Faye Tunnicliife for a single run. Though, Wolvaardt’s subsequent innings quickly shifted the momentum in South Africa’s favor.
The second T20 international between the two teams is scheduled for Sunday in Paarl, with a 12:00 GMT start time.
