Share Videos Online: Friends, Family & Publicly

March 22, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Families are increasingly turning to digital platforms to preserve and share home videos, a trend fueled by the desire to connect across distances and safeguard cherished memories. While the methods for digitizing older formats like VHS tapes are becoming more accessible, the question of how best to distribute those videos remains a central challenge.

Cloud storage services have emerged as a leading solution. Platforms such as Google Drive, Dropbox, and iCloud offer users the ability to upload videos and share them via a simple link, providing broad accessibility across multiple devices. Capture, in partnership with Google Photos, provides a streamlined pathway for storing and organizing digitized videos within the Google ecosystem, further simplifying the sharing process. According to Capture, these services offer ample storage capacity, addressing the often-substantial file sizes associated with video content.

Social media platforms similarly present options, though with considerations for privacy. Private Facebook groups and WhatsApp family chats allow for instant sharing of shorter clips, fostering immediate engagement. However, these platforms may not be ideal for longer-form videos or for families seeking more controlled access. YouTube offers a potential alternative, allowing users to upload videos as private or unlisted content, accessible only to those with the direct link.

For families prioritizing a physical medium, USB drives and external hard drives remain viable options, particularly for sharing large files or with those who may have limited internet access. This approach requires more manual effort in terms of distribution but offers a degree of control over the content’s location and security.

Dropbox, a long-standing cloud storage provider, offers tiered storage plans, starting with 2GB of free storage. Larger storage capacities, ranging from 2TB to 3TB, are available through paid subscriptions, costing $11.99 to $19.99 per month, with potential savings through annual plans. For unlimited storage, a Dropbox Business subscription is required, priced at $20 per month per user for groups of three or more.

Memento, a platform specifically designed for memory sharing, offers both Group Video creation tools and Shared Albums for photos and videos. The Group Video feature allows users to request, collect, and combine video clips from multiple contributors, while Shared Albums provide a centralized location for photo and video collections. Memento emphasizes ease of use and privacy features, including QR code sharing and customizable slideshows.

The increasing popularity of these services reflects a broader need for accessible and secure methods of preserving and sharing family history. As families become more geographically dispersed, the ability to easily share these personal narratives becomes increasingly important.
