Seven Network Secures Expanded NFL Broadcast Rights in Australia

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

the National Football League (NFL) is significantly expanding its global footprint, with Melbourne, Australia, confirmed as the host city for regular season games starting in 2026. This marks a major step in the league’s international strategy, signaling a growing demand for American football beyond its traditional north American base.

The NFL announced in February a multi-year agreement with the government of Victoria and the Melbourne Cricket ground (MCG) to host annual NFL fixtures for at least three years. The iconic MCG, boasting a capacity of 100,024, will become the first Australian venue to regularly host NFL games.

The Los Angeles Rams will be designated as the home team for the inaugural game in 2026.The Rams, along with the Sydney Swans (an Australian Football League team), have secured marketing rights for Australia through the NFL’s Global Markets Program, allowing them to cultivate a fanbase and build brand recognition in the region.

This expansion builds on the NFL’s increasing popularity internationally. Recent broadcast figures demonstrate substantial growth in viewership. Seven, an Australian broadcaster, reported a national TV audience of 892,000 for its 2025 Super Bowl coverage, an 11% increase compared to the previous season. The network’s total reach across the 2024 season reached 4.7 million viewers, a 6% rise.

The NFL’s international series began in 2007 with a game played at Wembley Stadium in London, England. Since then, games have also been held in mexico City, Mexico, and Frankfurt, Germany. The addition of Melbourne represents a meaningful eastward expansion, tapping into the growing sports market in the Asia-Pacific region. The league has previously explored potential games in othre locations, including China, but logistical and political challenges have hindered those efforts. The Australian market presents a more stable and receptive habitat.

the Victorian government is investing AUD$63 million (approximately USD$41 million) in upgrading the MCG to meet NFL standards, including improvements to the field and changing room facilities. This investment underscores the economic benefits anticipated from hosting NFL games, including tourism revenue and increased international exposure for the state of Victoria.
