Russian Attacks on Ukraine Kill 1, Wound 23 Ahead of Second Day of Peace Talks

February 1, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian attacks on Ukraine killed one person adn wounded 23 overnight into Saturday, as negotiators from Ukraine, Russia and the United States were set to meet in Abu Dhabi for a second day of talks to end Russia’s nearly four-year invasion.

The casualties occurred across several regions, including the eastern Donetsk region, where fighting has been particularly intense, officials said. It’s a grim reminder of the ongoing danger for civilians even as diplomatic efforts continue.

Details about the negotiations in Abu Dhabi are scarce. It isn’t clear what progress, if any, is being made. The talks involve representatives from Ukraine and Russia, with the U.S. participating as an observer. They’re hoping to find a path toward a lasting peace, but important obstacles remain.

russia’s invasion, which began in Febuary 2022, has caused widespread destruction and displacement in Ukraine. ukraine is heavily reliant on continued military and financial aid from Western countries, including the United states, to defend itself. There’s been some recent debate in the U.S. about further aid packages, which could impact Ukraine’s ability to continue fighting.

The Ukrainian government has repeatedly stated it won’t cede any territory to Russia. russia, meanwhile, insists it’s protecting Russian-speaking populations and has accused the West of escalating the conflict through arms deliveries to Ukraine. These differing positions make a negotiated settlement incredibly difficult.

The overnight attacks included missile strikes and shelling, according to Ukrainian authorities. They’re working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to those affected. It’s a constant struggle to protect civilians in a war zone.
