Pforzheim‘s PZ Media group Unveils “PZ Nova,” an Interactive Public Display of Local Journalism
Pforzheim, Germany – Local news is getting a high-tech makeover in Pforzheim with the launch of “PZ Nova,” a groundbreaking interactive LED wall spearheaded by the PZ media house, publisher of pz-news.de. The project, unveiled this week, aims to redefine how citizens engage with local journalism, transforming it from a passive reading experience into an active, immersive one.
“With PZ Nova, we want to position PZ as a portal to the future, demonstrating the potential of dialog in the digital age,” explained Magnus Bad, Digital Manager for PZ media. The initiative is a key component of the company’s broader digital strategy, building on its early adoption of online communication platforms.
The centerpiece of PZ Nova is a 30-square-meter video wall located opposite the PZ publishing building. Developed by Pforzheim-based startup Luftschloss, spun out of Gieske Studios, the technology utilizes depth sensor data - rather than customary camera imagery – to ensure complete visitor anonymity while allowing for intuitive interaction.
Visitors can engage with the display by stepping onto a designated “PZ media stone” embedded in the ground and using hand gestures and body movements to control the content. This innovative approach, patented for both fire safety and data protection, allows for a uniquely personal experience.
“PZ nova makes content visible and tangible – right in the heart of Pforzheim local journalism,” said Thomas Andraschko, Managing Director of Luftschloss. “This project is a fusion of journalism, technology, and the urban landscape.”
beyond delivering regional news, PZ nova is envisioned as a platform for interactive applications, rankings, and playful content formats. Alexandra Rhode, Creative Director at Luftschloss, emphasized the shift in how audiences will consume news: “The newspaper is no longer just read, but experienced.” Even advertising is being reimagined, appearing as interactive,motion-controlled applications on the screen.
PZ publisher Albert Esslinger-Kiefer hailed PZ Nova as a testament to the innovative spirit of local journalism. He underscored the collaborative nature of the project, acknowledging the support of the city of pforzheim and contributions from local craftspeople and architects. “This installation is an experimental field for new communication forms,” esslinger-Kiefer stated,”and a clear signal that local journalism is forging new paths in the digital realm.”
