Peugeot 208 GTI Electric: Hot Hatch Reborn as EV

Peugeot Shocks Le Mans with Electric E-208 GTi: A Modern Take on a Legendary Nameplate

Le Mans, France – While Peugeot battles for endurance glory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with it’s 9X8 hypercar, the French automaker stole the show in a different way this weekend: by unveiling the all-new, all-electric Peugeot E-208 GTi. This isn’t your father’s GTi. Ditching the internal combustion engine, Peugeot has reimagined its iconic “Gran Turismo Injection” badge for the electric age.

The E-208 GTi shares its underpinnings with other sporty Stellantis offerings like the Abarth 600e,Ypsilon HF,and Alfa romeo Junior, utilizing the CMP platform – but with meaningful upgrades. Engineers widened the front and rear tracks by 56mm and 27mm respectively, and lowered the ride height by 30mm, promising a more planted and engaging driving experience.Surprisingly, this modern GTi opts for a five-door configuration, a departure from the three-door tradition of past 205, 206, 207, and 208 GTi models.

Power & Performance:

Under the sleek, head-turning exterior lies a 54 kWh battery pack powering a Stellantis M4+ electric motor. This combination delivers a punchy 280 horsepower and 345 Nm (255 lb-ft) of torque. Peugeot claims a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in just 5.7 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 180 km/h (112 mph).

To maintain the GTi’s reputation for nimble handling, the E-208 GTi features front-wheel drive coupled with an autoblocant differential, enhancing traction and cornering prowess.

A Nod to the Past, A Leap to the Future:

This launch comes after speculation about a potential Argentine-market 208 GTi powered by a traditional turbo engine. While that didn’t materialize, Peugeot has delivered something arguably more exciting: a fully electric hot hatch that honors the spirit of its predecessors while embracing the future of automotive performance.
