Peru Declares State of‍ emergency, Deploys Troops⁣ to ‍Border with Chile‍ Amid Migration Concerns

Tacna, Peru – November 29, 2023 – peru has⁢ declared a 60-day state of emergency and is deploying military⁢ personnel to its border with Chile in anticipation ⁤of ⁢a potential influx of migrants.The ⁢measure, effective immediately, applies to the border districts of⁢ Palca, Tacna, and‍ La Yarada-Los Palos ⁣in the Tacna region (south)⁢ of Peru.

The declaration comes as migrants attempt to ⁣cross into Peru, reportedly due to⁢ concerns over⁣ the potential victory of ​far-right‌ presidential candidate José Antonio Kast‍ in Chile’s upcoming December 14th election. Kast has pledged to expel approximately 330,000⁣ undocumented‌ immigrants, many of whom are Venezuelan, blaming them for rising insecurity.

Peruvian ⁤Interior Minister Vicente Tiburcio, who traveled to the border in Tacna, ‌confirmed‍ the 60-day duration of the state of emergency in a statement​ to RPP radio. fifty Army soldiers are being deployed “immediately” to the Santa Rosa ‌border post, with another⁤ 50 scheduled to arrive in early December.

The decree also cites‍ a ‌need to “combat crime and other situations of violence,” with the‍ National ​Police⁤ of Peru maintaining⁢ control of ⁣internal order with the support ‍of ⁤the Armed Forces.

Chile’s Minister⁤ of Security, ‍Luis ​Cordero, has acknowledged a “concentration of migrants” attempting to leave Chile and enter Peru, though he did not specify⁢ the ‌number involved. ​ Images broadcast by Radio Tacna show migrants, including⁢ families with children, gathering near the border ⁣crossing.
