Pauline Ferrand-Prévot Downplays‌ Title Talk Ahead of Kigali road Worlds

KIGALI, ‍RWANDA – Pauline Ferrand-Prévot arrives in Kigali ‌this Saturday, ‌seeking a potential ninth elite world ‍title, but the French cycling star ‍insists she⁤ isn’t focused on the historical ‍implications‍ as ‌she prepares for the women’s road race on⁤ September 27.⁢ Despite being installed as‍ a six-star favorite,⁣ Ferrand-Prévot is approaching the challenging, mountainous course with ‌a relaxed mindset, a⁣ shift she credits to a renewed focus on mental freedom.

Ferrand-Prévot last‌ claimed a ‌road world‌ title ‌in 2014,⁣ defeating Lisa Brennauer. She initially planned to ‌skip the race due to the long travel distance but reversed her decision last month. ⁣”It’s strange, thinking that I still feel good now,” she ‍said. The french team boasts ⁤significant strength, with support from Juliette Labous and Cédrine Kerboal, allowing Ferrand-Prévot to share the responsibility.

The upcoming race sees⁣ a reshaped field, with defending champion Lotte Kopecky sidelined due to a broken ‌back. Ferrand-Prévot’s change ‍of heart, she revealed on social media, stems from a⁣ departure from ⁢past pressures. ⁣”Last year,⁤ I put a lot of pressure on myself ⁤for the Games, where, for me, ‍there was no other option than to win,” Ferrand-Prévot told L’Équipe. “This⁣ year…the goal was more to ⁢prepare for it as well as possible and to be more mentally free.”

National coach Paul Brousse noted Ferrand-Prévot’s⁤ limited⁣ racing schedule this year contributed to her feeling capable of regaining⁤ full strength. She recently⁢ completed⁢ a⁢ three-week solo training block at altitude in Andorra, a period she found beneficial for preparation. Ferrand-Prévot ⁣will be looking to overcome rivals such as Demi Vollering and Elisa Longo Borghini on the demanding course.
