Lotte Kopecky: Weight Loss Strategy Backfired, Impacted Tour de France Femmes

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor December 6, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Lotte Kopecky Abandons Tour de France Ambitions After Weight Loss Struggles

Belgian cyclist Lotte Kopecky has announced‌ a shift in focus ‍away from‌ contending‌ for the general classification in the ⁤Tour de France, ⁤citing a ‌detrimental experience wiht weight loss efforts during⁤ her 2024 ‌campaign.‌ Kopecky, who finished second‍ overall in the 2023 Tour, experienced her weakest‍ performance to date in the⁤ race this year, finishing ⁣45th overall with a best stage result of 11th.

The athlete’s struggles stemmed ‌from a readiness⁤ strategy centered‌ around weight reduction, a method successfully employed by rival Pauline Ferrand Prévot, who shed four ⁣kilos prior to winning ⁤the event by nearly four minutes. However, Kopecky’s attempt proved⁣ counterproductive.

“It didn’t get a fair chance,” Kopecky stated regarding ‍her Tour ⁤campaign. “With the preparation that wasn’t good, it was‌ a hopeless case.Focusing on ⁣a general ⁣classification in the Tour wasn’t the very ‌best choice, but ⁢I also can’t say I regret⁤ it. ⁤Otherwise, after my career, I might have regretted never ⁢having tried.”

Kopecky revealed the process of working with a dietitian became a ⁢notable‍ mental burden. “Last season ⁢I started working with a ⁤dietitian, and that was a big burden for me,” she said at the Belgian track championships, according to Sporza.‌ “now the numbers came into play and you expect very big changes. But ‍they did not come.‌ In preparation, it was already ‌mentally too ‍much.”

While⁢ acknowledging the possibility of future ‌Tour de France participation, Kopecky ⁤emphasized a change in approach. “I’m not saying it’s 200 percent off the table, but for now, it is indeed,” she told ⁣Het Nieuwsblad. “I would only do ‌it ‍on a course that suits me 200 percent.”

Kopecky intends to prioritize track racing and the classics,⁤ aiming‍ for a return to a healthier and more accomplished racing ‌style. The experience highlights the delicate balance between performance optimization and athlete well-being in ⁣professional cycling, notably concerning‍ weight management. Ferrand Prévot herself ⁢cautioned‍ that⁤ her ‍successful weight loss was achieved⁤ under ‌expert ‍medical supervision and⁤ was intended ‍to be temporary, later experiencing a dip in form.

Kopecky’s experience underscores⁣ the potential pitfalls ⁤of⁢ aggressive weight loss strategies, even when undertaken with the ‌best⁣ intentions.

pro Cycling Safety ⁢Under Scrutiny: Airbags and⁢ licensing Debated⁣ for ⁣2026

teh Velo Podcast recently tackled the critical question of enhancing safety‌ in professional cycling, exploring the⁣ potential ⁢of rider airbags and a proposed⁣ “super license” system. Host Mike Levy, ⁣alongside tech editors Alvin Holbrook and ⁢Josh Ross, dissected whether these solutions‍ would genuinely improve rider safety, ⁤as concerns mount over increasingly high-speed crashes within the pro peloton.

the‌ discussion⁤ centered on the viability of ‌bib shorts ⁢equipped with automatically inflating⁢ airbags – technology proven effective in MotoGP. While the potential for impact ⁢protection is clear, the podcast team debated practical⁢ considerations like weight ‌penalties, comfort during long ⁣stages, and potential resistance ‌from clothing sponsors.

Beyond airbags, ⁢the conversation turned to a‌ licensing system‌ suggested by CPA ⁣president Adam Hansen. The editors considered the merits of proficiency tests for professional riders, questioning ‌what skills such courses should prioritize and whether the administrative ⁢burden would outweigh the safety benefits. ‍

Looking ahead⁢ to 2026, the podcast also previewed anticipated ‌updates to several gravel bikes, with speculation focusing on a potential new Specialized Crux and broader trends in the gravel bike market. Nine new or updated models are expected, prompting discussion ‍on the evolving⁢ demands of the discipline.

Listeners can join Josh and Levy on a Zwift group ride; details are available here. Previous episodes of the Velo Podcast can be found⁢ here. ‍

Pogačar Commits to Racing Through 2030,Dismisses Retirement Talk

BERGAMO,ITALY – Tadej Pogačar has reaffirmed his commitment‍ to professional cycling, stating he intends to honor‍ his contract with UAE Team Emirates through 2030 and dismissing ‌earlier suggestions ⁢of a⁤ potential retirement following the 2028 Los Angeles olympics. The clarification ‌comes during the off-season as Pogačar resumes training following a ‌dominant 2025 ‌season, including a record-equaling fifth victory at Il Lombardia.

Pogačar had hinted at a possible earlier-than-expected retirement‌ during‍ the Tour, but now insists the idea of ⁤leaving at the end of 2028 was never seriously considered. “I never considered leaving at the end of 2028,” ‌he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.‍ “I signed the contract until 2030 and, unless ‍something crazy happens, of course I will respect it. I ‍would never have or else signed keeping that date in mind.”

The Slovenian star ‍also⁣ reiterated his⁢ ambition to compete for victories ‍in ⁤the Milan-San Remo ‍and Paris-Roubaix classics, stating, “Winning such a classic is much bigger than going there thinking⁣ that you ⁢might win.” Despite the demanding nature of the sport, Pogačar‍ emphasized ⁣a renewed enthusiasm following a mental reset during the off-season.

he⁣ expressed strong loyalty to his ‍current team, adding,”Every year ⁣the team improves and I feel more‍ and more in a ⁤family. I don’t see myself anywhere else, and if I want to race beyond‌ 2030 it’s‌ very likely‍ that it’s always with the UAE.” Pogačar is currently back in training, acknowledging it will take‌ time to regain peak racing form.

Factor Bikes Ending partnership with Israel-Premier Tech

November 19, 2025 ⁣ – Factor Bikes is ending its long-term equipment supply partnership with the Israel-Premier Tech (IPT) cycling team, adding to the recent instability within the institution. ⁣The⁣ news follows ⁤the announced withdrawal of title sponsor Premier Tech in 2026⁣ and comes as ‌the team undergoes a significant⁤ rebranding effort.

According to‍ a report by ⁣ Daniel Benson’s Cycling Substack, Scott Bikes have‌ already been delivered‌ to the team’s headquarters ‍in Girona, Spain. It remains unclear whether Scott will act as a lead sponsor or simply an equipment supplier.

Factor‍ Bikes had previously requested in⁢ late September that the team⁣ drop the ‘Israel’ affiliation from its name, a change IPT had planned to implement for the 2026 season. Though, both Factor and Premier Tech ⁣accelerated ⁤their ⁣departures‍ before the rebranding could be finalized.

The⁢ timing of these changes coincides⁤ with other shifts in the professional cycling sponsorship landscape. Q36.5 Pro Cycling‍ recently announced a partnership with Pinarello, with the Italian ⁢brand ‌taking on‍ both bike supplier and leading sponsor roles for the team featuring Tom Pidcock. Premier Tech has also announced a ‌new partnership with the women’s UCI ProTeam st Michel-Preference Home-Auber93.

IPT is now facing a challenging future as it navigates sponsor withdrawals, internal restructuring, and geopolitical pressures while attempting to secure new funding ⁤and complete its rebranding.

Italian cycling apparel brand Q36.5 ⁣has unveiled‍ a new, limited-run wet-weather capsule collection featuring a uniquely named mid-layer jacket‍ dubbed “The Condom.”⁢ The garment, designed for cold and⁤ wet racing conditions,‍ is part of a three-piece system also ⁣including the⁣ Rain Shell Plus Jacket and a base layer, all currently‍ used ⁤by the Q36.5 Pro cycling‍ team.
