The club, a fixture in the Auckland sporting community, announced today it will be relocating its operations, continuing its archery programs elsewhere in the region.
Established in 1954, the Mountain Green Archery club has provided archery instruction and facilities for generations of Aucklanders. The club’s range, located on Mt Albert, has been a consistent location for both recreational and competitive archery. The club’s current facilities include a clubhouse constructed in 1957.
The move comes as the club faces challenges in maintaining and improving its facilities at the current site. Despite decades of responsible land use, limitations have prevented necessary refurbishments and upgrades to the aging clubhouse. The club emphasizes its commitment to continuing its beginner courses and extensive youth coaching programs, aiming to remain accessible to the local community.
“The timing has caused massive stress on our volunteers,” a club spokesperson stated. “We’ve worked very hard during our entire time on Ōwairaka/Mt Albert to use the range space with care and respect, but we’ve also been unable to make improvements like refurbishing or replacing our aged clubroom, built in 1957.”
The MGAC is actively searching for a new location in central or West Auckland to ensure continued service to its existing members and the wider community. The club is appealing to the public for suggestions regarding potential public or private land suitable for its new home, directing inquiries to info@mgac.org.nz.
“We’re looking toward the future now and getting excited about what we could make happen in a fresh new space,” the spokesperson added.
