OpenAI Rolls Out Group Chat Feature for ChatGPT, Mimicking WhatsApp Functionality

San Francisco,⁢ CA ⁤ – OpenAI has launched a new Group Chat feature‍ for ChatGPT,⁤ enabling collaborative conversations with the AI assistant alongside friends⁣ and colleagues. ‍Initially available to⁣ Plus and⁣ Pro users in Japan,New ⁤zealand,South Korea, and Taiwan, the feature‍ allows users to⁤ bring others into⁣ a ⁤ChatGPT conversation for assistance with tasks like trip ⁢planning or decision-making. The company intends to expand the‍ feature to additional regions based on initial⁤ user feedback.

The new‌ functionality mirrors similar offerings from Meta’s WhatsApp, where users can interact with⁢ AI within both ⁣group and individual chats. However, OpenAI emphasizes a key distinction: unlike Meta AI,⁣ conversations within ChatGPT’s Group Chat will not ⁤be used ⁣for targeted advertising⁤ or personalized content.

OpenAI envisions the group Chat⁣ feature as notably useful for collective problem-solving. “It is helpful for group decisions like finding a restaurant or settling ⁢a debate, where ChatGPT could act as an impartial referee,” ⁢the company stated in a blog post. Users can also share articles,⁢ notes, and⁣ questions within⁤ the group chat, prompting ChatGPT ⁣to summarize and organise the information.

To initiate a group chat,‍ users can tap the peopel icon in the ⁤top-right corner of an existing chat. Adding a friend creates a new group⁣ chat, preserving the original conversation. Users can also share a link to invite up ⁣to⁤ twenty participants.

New ⁣users joining or ‍creating a ‌group chat will be ⁣prompted ‍to create a profile with ⁣their name, username, and photo for identification. Group chats will be accessible through a dedicated section in the sidebar.
