Nicholas Brendon Dies: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Star Was 54

March 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for his role as Xander Harris in the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” died Friday, March 20, 2026, at the age of 54. His family confirmed his death in a statement, citing natural causes stemming from a congenital heart defect and recent health challenges. USA Today reported the actor passed away in his sleep. Born in Los Angeles in 1971, Brendon found widespread recognition in 1997 with his portrayal of Xander Harris, the witty and relatable friend of Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Over seven seasons, Xander served as a grounding force within the supernatural world of Sunnydale, providing comic relief and emotional depth to the series. The Modern York Times noted that Brendon’s character was “one of Buffy’s closest friends and a would-be Don Juan plagued by a sense of inadequacy.” While “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” concluded in 2003, Brendon continued to perform in television, appearing in recurring roles on shows such as “Criminal Minds,” where he played FBI technical analyst Kevin Lynch from 2007 to 2014, and “Private Practice.” He also had guest appearances on series including “Without a Trace” and “Kitchen Confidential.” NBC News highlighted his versatility as an actor, extending beyond his iconic role. In recent years, Brendon faced a series of health setbacks. In 2022, he was hospitalized for tachycardia, an abnormally rapid heart rate, and diagnosed with a congenital heart defect common in twins. He shared an identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan, who occasionally served as his stand-in on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” sets. He also underwent spinal surgeries to address cauda equina syndrome, a condition resulting from nerve compression in the lower spine, following a fall in 2021 that required emergency intervention to prevent paralysis. Brendon was also open about his struggles with substance abuse and mental health. He had a scheduled appearance on “The Dr. Phil Indicate” in 2015 to discuss these issues, but reportedly walked off the set during the interview, according to USA Today. Prior to that, he faced multiple arrests in 2014 and 2015 related to disturbances and property damage. In the years leading up to his death, Brendon discovered a passion for painting and art, sharing his work with family and friends. His family’s statement emphasized that his artistic pursuits were “one of the purest reflections of who he was.” They requested privacy as they mourned the loss of “a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.” The family indicated that Brendon was optimistic about the future, having been on medication to manage his health conditions.
