NH State Police Lieutenant Rescues Driver from Burning Car on I-93 in Concord

August 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The driver, who had veered off the highway and collided with a tree near Exit 16, was extracted with the assistance of a bystander before emergency crews arrived.

The Sequence of Events on I-93

At approximately 1:30 p.m., Concord Fire Department personnel responded to reports of a vehicle fire between exits 15 and 16. According to Concord Fire Chief John Chisholm, the vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree, igniting a fire that eventually consumed the car. Lieutenant Davis, who was traveling southbound, observed the blaze and intervened immediately.

The rescue effort required a coordinated response between law enforcement and a civilian witness. State police confirmed that Davis and the bystander successfully pulled the driver from the wreckage before the fire became fully unmanageable. By the time Concord Fire crews arrived on the scene, the driver had been removed from the vehicle.

“The Lieutenant would like to thank the bystander who assisted him at the scene,” the New Hampshire State Police stated in a formal release.

Medical Impact and Ongoing Investigations

The driver of the vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries during the collision and was transported to Concord Hospital for emergency care. Lieutenant Davis also sought medical evaluation at the hospital as a precautionary measure due to potential smoke inhalation sustained during the rescue. No other injuries were reported.

The incident highlights the inherent risks of highway travel and the critical role of rapid intervention in emergency scenarios. When accidents involving severe personal injury occur, families often require specialized support to manage the immediate aftermath.

Infrastructure and Public Safety Context

The crash serves as a reminder of the importance of bystander awareness and rapid law enforcement response.

Disaster preparedness and emergency response are not merely reactive measures; they are essential components of community stability. Whether dealing with the aftermath of a vehicle fire or other unforeseen catastrophes, having access to reliable, vetted professionals is the best defense against the uncertainty that follows such events. As the investigation into this incident proceeds, the community continues to look toward official updates from the New Hampshire State Police for further clarification on the circumstances of the crash.
