New Zealand: Man Extradited from Singapore Pleads Not Guilty to Rape & Burglary Charges

March 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Auckland, New Zealand – Xuesong Zhang, a 41-year-old man accused of a violent home invasion, rape, and prolonged assault, appeared in the High Court of Auckland on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, to face 12 charges. The New Zealand Herald reported that Zhang pleaded not guilty to all counts through his lawyer, Sarah Dickson, and a trial date has been set for March 2027.

The charges stem from an alleged incident on March 26, 2024, in Massey, West Auckland, where authorities allege Zhang burglarized a home armed with a knife. Court documents detailed in the New Zealand Herald allege that Zhang subjected a woman to a brutal attack, including taping her mouth shut, holding a knife to her throat, and carrying out degrading sexual acts. He is also accused of strangulation and threatening to kill the victim, allegedly scratching the knife across her torso during the assault.

Zhang’s case took a complex turn following the alleged attack. Authorities initially believed he had fled to China, a country with which New Zealand does not have an extradition treaty. However, he was later apprehended while visiting Singapore, which does maintain an extradition treaty with New Zealand. Stuff.co.nz reported that Zhang was taken into custody in Singapore after approximately two years at large.

The charges against Zhang include three counts each of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and indecent assault, alongside single counts of aggravated burglary, threatening to kill, strangulation, abduction for the purpose of sexual connection, assault with a weapon, and sexual violation by rape. If convicted on the most serious charges, Zhang could face a maximum sentence of up to 20 years’ imprisonment.

Prior to his arrest, Zhang was identified as a builder by profession and a resident of Singapore. His extradition and subsequent appearance in the Auckland High Court mark a significant development in a case that has drawn considerable attention in New Zealand. The trial, scheduled for next March, will likely scrutinize the complexities of international extradition and the challenges of prosecuting crimes committed across national borders.

The court has yet to release details regarding potential witnesses or the evidence that will be presented during the trial. The case remains active, and Zhang is currently being held in custody pending further proceedings.
