Navalny Death: European States Point to Frog Toxin Poisoning & Russian State Responsibility

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Five European nations have jointly accused Russia of assassinating opposition leader Alexei Navalny using a nerve agent derived from dart frog toxins, escalating international condemnation of the Kremlin. The accusation, made at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, alleges that Russia possessed the “means, motive and opportunity” to carry out the poisoning.

The joint statement, released by the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, detailed laboratory analyses of samples taken from Navalny’s body which revealed the presence of epibatidine, a highly toxic substance found in the skin of South American dart frogs. “Russia claimed that Navalny died of natural causes. But given the toxicity of epibatidine and reported symptoms, poisoning was highly likely the cause of his death,” the statement read.

Navalny, a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died on February 16, 2024, while serving a 19-year prison sentence in an Arctic penal colony. His death, initially attributed by Russian authorities to natural causes, has prompted widespread skepticism and calls for an independent investigation.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the UK believes Russia is “responsible for his death,” adding that “only the Russian state had the means, motive and opportunity to deploy this lethal toxin.” The UK government has reported the findings to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), expressing concern that Russia has not fully destroyed its chemical weapons stockpile, potentially violating the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, hailed the findings as “science-proven” evidence of her husband’s murder. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, she stated, “Two years ago, I came on stage here and said that it was Vladimir Putin who killed my husband… but back then it was just words. But today these words have turn into science-proven facts.” She had previously announced in September that laboratory analysis of biological samples smuggled from the prison indicated poisoning as the cause of death.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot asserted that Putin is “prepared to use biological weapons against his own people to remain in power.”

The Kremlin has denied the allegations. Russian authorities have maintained that Navalny died due to complications from a pre-existing medical condition, following a collapse during a walk in the prison colony. Navalny and his foundation had been designated as “extremist” by Russian authorities.

This incident marks the second time Navalny has been targeted with poisoning. In 2020, he was poisoned with the Soviet-era nerve agent Novichok while campaigning in Siberia, requiring emergency medical evacuation to Germany for treatment. He was subsequently arrested upon his return to Russia in January 2021 and convicted on charges widely considered politically motivated.
