NATO deploys Fighters as Russian Drone Attacks Target Ukraine
Bucharest, Romania – In a swift response too escalating tensions, NATO deployed German fighter jets on Wednesday to bolster security in Romanian airspace following a series of Russian drone attacks targeting Ukrainian ports on the Danube River. The action underscores the alliance’s commitment to safeguarding its member states amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Romanian Ministry of National Defense reported that its surveillance systems detected waves of drones launched by Russia late Tuesday into early Wednesday, aimed at Ukrainian ports. In response, two German Air Force Typhoon planes stationed at Romania’s 57th Air Base were scrambled to monitor the border region in Tulcea County.
According to the Defense Ministry, the deployed jets did not detect any unauthorized intrusions into Romanian airspace and safely returned to base. This deployment is part of a broader NATO initiative to enhance air policing capabilities in southeastern Europe.Germany assumed this role in July, taking over from the Italian Air Force, and will maintain the presence for eight months.
The attacks come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that a gas distribution station in the Odesa region, bordering Tulcea County, was among the targets hit during the overnight strikes. This is not the first time concerns have been raised about the proximity of these attacks to Romanian territory. earlier this month, Romania contacted NATO after a Russian drone attack near the border triggered warning alerts in northern Tulcea.
This latest incident highlights the potential for escalation and the need for continued vigilance along the border. The deployment of German fighter jets demonstrates NATO’s resolve to protect its members and deter further aggression.
