Munich Airport Suspends Operations Following drone Sightings
Munich,Germany – Munich Airport halted operations Thursday night due to observed drones in the vicinity, impacting thousands of travelers. German air traffic control, DFS, initially restricted airspace over Munich after 10:00 PM local time, ultimately leading to a complete suspension of flights.
The disruption resulted in the cancellation of 17 departing flights, affecting approximately 3,000 passengers who were provided with food, drink, and accommodations at the airport.Fifteen inbound flights were diverted to airports in Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt. As of Friday morning, the resumption of normal operations remained uncertain, according to German federal police.
The incident follows similar temporary airport closures in Denmark and Norway last week, also attributed to drone sightings. Both danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Swedish Prime Minister ulf Kristersson have suggested potential Russian involvement. EU leaders discussed bolstering European defense against drones during a meeting in Copenhagen on wednesday.
