Perilous Selfies: Study Reveals Riskiest locations Worldwide
A new study has identified the world’s most dangerous destinations for taking selfies, with Italy topping the list. Researchers analyzed news reports from March 2014 to May 2025, documenting incidents where selfie-taking resulted in fatalities or injuries.
The study, conducted by The Barber Law Firm, found that Italy recorded the highest number of selfie-related harmful incidents. The united States ranked second, followed by Russia as the third most dangerous location.
Over the decade-long period examined, the U.S. reported a total of 45 selfie-related incidents, with 37 proving fatal and eight resulting in injuries. Russia allegedly had 18 deaths and one injury, totaling 19 incidents.
Pakistan and Australia rounded out the top five, with 16 and 15 incidents respectively. Indonesia, kenya, the United Kingdom, Spain, and brazil consecutively completed the Top 10, reporting 14, 13, 13, 13, and 13 incidents, respectively.
The research revealed that falls from elevated places were responsible for 46% of selfie-related deaths and injuries.
“Our research highlights a troubling trend where the pursuit of social media validation is literally costing lives. the perfect photo simply isn’t worth the danger,” said Kris Barber, founder and principal attorney at The Barber Law Firm. “What’s particularly concerning is that most of these tragedies could have been avoided by taking a few steps back or finding a safer vantage point.”
Barber emphasized the availability of safer alternatives, stating, “There are always safer alternatives to capture beautiful moments without putting yourself at risk. No amount of likes or shares can justify endangering your life.”
