Canada at the Middle East Peace Summit: A Path Forward for Gaza
Today, Prime minister Mark Carney concluded his participation in the historic Middle East Peace Summit in Egypt, a gathering convened with the leadership of the United States and Egypt, signaling a new chapter for peace in the region.
Prime Minister Carney expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald J. trump for his complete peace plan and crucial role in securing the release of hostages and ending the conflict in Gaza. He also commended the tireless mediation efforts of Egyptian President abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, turkish President recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and other key partners.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need to translate this progress into concrete action, focusing on three key areas:
* Humanitarian Relief: Immediate and unimpeded access for large-scale humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza is paramount, requiring Israel to open border crossings.
* Stabilization and Security: Accelerated preparations for a temporary International Stabilization Force are crucial to disarm Hamas, facilitate israeli withdrawal, and protect civilians. Canada supports the U.S.and France’s efforts to establish a UN-mandated mission.
* governance and Long-Term Peace: Canada reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the Palestinian Authority, enabling it to resume governance in Gaza and actively participate in shaping the future peace plan.
Canada has already pledged over $400 million in international assistance to support humanitarian, peace and security, and progress initiatives in Palestine, including over $270 million in humanitarian aid and investments in peace-building and recovery.
During the Summit, Prime Minister Carney engaged in discussions with leaders and officials from france, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Türkiye, Palestine, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Greece, Norway, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Armenia, Oman, Pakistan, Paraguay, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Nations. These conversations centered on collaborative next steps for humanitarian aid, security, and reconstruction.
Looking forward, Canada stands ready to support free and fair elections in Palestine – excluding Hamas participation – to contribute to a framework for Gaza’s recovery, and to foster a just, lasting, and lasting peace in the Middle East.
