Shooting at Michigan Church Leaves Two Dead, Eight Wounded
Grand Blanc, Michigan – September 28, 2025 – A shooting at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, has left two people dead and eight others injured, police confirmed Sunday. One person is in critical condition, while the remaining seven are stable and receiving treatment at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital.
According too police, the alleged gunman drove a vehicle into the front of the church during a service attended by hundreds, than exited and opened fire with an assault rifle. The suspect is deceased, but authorities have not yet released details regarding their identity or how they died.
Initial reports indicate the suspect also deliberately set fire to the church,though the blaze was later extinguished. police Chief Renye stated that additional victims may be found once the scene is secured.
“My husband heard people screaming; one lady yelling for help,” recounted a local resident to AFP.Another witness, identified as Paula, who was inside the church during the attack, told WXYZ television, ”I lost friends in there, and some of my little primary children that I teach on sundays were hurt. It’s very devastating for me.”
Authorities are currently searching the shooter’s home and examining phone records to determine a motive. The FBI is assisting local police with the investigation.
The shooting prompted swift condemnation from political leaders. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated, ”Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” and expressed her heartbreak for the Grand Blanc community.President Donald Trump, who said he had been briefed on the “horrendous” shooting, wrote on his Truth Social platform, “The suspect is dead, but there is still a lot to learn.” FBI chief Kash Patel echoed the sentiment, stating, “Violence in a place of worship is a cowardly and criminal act.”
members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are commonly known as Mormons. Grand Blanc is a town of approximately 7,700 people located about 60 miles northwest of Detroit. The incident occurred the day following the death of 101-year-old Mormon leader Russell Nelson.
