MICA Names 2025 Honorary Degree Recipients

These individuals, including artist Christopher Myers and curator George Ciscle, will address the graduating classes on May 19th at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) has announced its honorary degree recipients for 2025. These distinguished individuals will address graduates at the Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement Ceremonies scheduled for monday, May 19, at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, adjacent to MICA’s campus.
Undergraduate Commencement: Christopher Myers
Christopher Myers, a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist and award-winning children’s book illustrator, will address the undergraduate class. His work spans various media, including tapestries, sculpture, and writing. Myers’ storytelling-centered practice frequently enough involves international collaborations,with his pieces appearing at prominent institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Kennedy Center.

Myers describes his artistic focus:
history is the story of where you have come from, mythology is the story of why and where you are going. My work as a storyteller and as an artist centers on pulling mythologies apart from official records.
Christopher myers
His global reach is evident in collaborations with artists from Indonesia, Sudan, Vietnam, Kenya, ghana, Egypt, Denmark, and the United States. Myers is also a recipient of the American Library Association’s Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Award for his book illustration.
Graduate Commencement: George Ciscle
george Ciscle, a Baltimore-based artist, curator, and educator, will speak at the graduate ceremony. Ciscle is renowned for founding MICA’s MFA in Curatorial Practice, a pioneering program in the field. A long-time leader in Baltimore’s art scene, he has collaborated on exhibitions with institutions such as the Walters Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art.

- Both ceremonies will be held on Monday, may 19, at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.
- The Graduate Commencement begins at 10 a.m., followed by the Undergraduate Commencement at 3 p.m.

ArtWalk
Commencement coincides with the end of MICA’s annual ArtWalk event, Baltimore’s largest public display of visual art. artwalk begins on Friday, May 16, and includes the ArtWalk Commencement Exhibition. The ArtWalk Opening will take place from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. that evening.
