Meta Unveils Ray-Ban Display: First Intelligent Glasses Controlled by Brain Signals
MENLO PARK, CA – Meta today announced the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, representing what CEO Mark Zuckerberg called “an vital scientific advance” in augmented reality technology. The glasses, developed in partnership with Ray-Ban and Oakley, feature integrated cameras and microphones and are designed to mimic the appearance of customary eyewear.
The key innovation lies in the glasses’ ability to respond to signals from the brain. Subtle muscle movements are detected by the Meta Neural Band – a wrist-worn accessory – allowing users to control functions with hand gestures. the neural Band offers up to 18 hours of battery life and is water resistant.
The Ray-Ban Meta Display connects to both Android and iOS smartphones via Bluetooth, enabling features such as message sending, video calls, real-time subtitles, translations, navigation, music control, and photo/video capture.
three new models will be available in stores starting October 30th, with a starting price of $799 (approximately €730).
The launch comes amidst scrutiny of Meta’s approach to user safety, notably concerning the generation of inappropriate content – including sexual and racist material – by its artificial intelligence systems. The company is currently facing multiple complaints related to this issue.
