**Melatonin and Heart Failure: Correlation, Not Causation**

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Melatonin Use Linked to Increased Heart failure Risk, Study Finds

A new study suggests a meaningful link⁢ between‍ melatonin use and an ‌increased risk of⁣ heart failure, with a reported 90 percent higher chance of developing the condition among those taking the supplement. Though,‌ researchers emphasize the findings demonstrate a ⁢correlation, not a ⁤direct causal relationship.

“The message‌ is not that melatonin is hazardous, but that we should ⁤not⁤ assume that somthing is completely risk-free just because it is natural or⁤ sold without‍ a prescription,” explained lead researcher Ekenedilichukwu Nnadi in an interview with⁤ The Washington Post.

The study, which has yet ⁢to be peer-reviewed, ⁣focused on individuals who received melatonin⁣ via ⁤prescription.⁢ This‍ presents a limitation, as‍ melatonin is ⁤widely ⁢available over-the-counter in many countries, ⁤making it‍ difficult to determine the extent of overall⁣ usage.‍

Sleep scientist Akinbolaji Akingbola notes the need for further examination. “One‍ needs to carry out randomized studies, ⁤were‍ the participants receive either melatonin‌ or a placebo⁣ at random, in order to get a more reliable‍ result,” he stated.

Experts also caution that underlying sleep problems themselves can contribute to heart ⁢issues, self-reliant of melatonin use.The research underscores the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.
