MCSO Monitoring: Arizona Lawyer’s Response & History

Sun City West Resident criticizes Handling of MCSO Federal Monitoring Case

Scott Mitzner, a resident of sun City West, has voiced strong criticism regarding the prolonged federal monitoring of the Maricopa county Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), a situation he believes has been mishandled for years.

In a letter responding to a previous article titled “Group calls on feds to end MCSO monitoring,” Mitzner asserts that the issue has persisted since 2014. He claims that upon moving to Arizona in 2013, he recognized the problematic situation and offered his assistance.

Mitzner, who began his legal career in the late 1970s, recounted his experience working in the Will County State’s Attorney Office in Illinois. At that time, he was advised to allow government expert lawyers specializing in liability insurance to resolve a lawsuit filed by the ACLU against county schools.

He questions how Maricopa County became entangled in its current predicament, suggesting that after four decades, insurance defense lawyers shoudl have been capable of resolving the ACLU case with minimal taxpayer expense.Mitzner alleges that both Republican and Democratic parties exploited the lawsuit for their own political agendas.

According to Mitzner, Republicans have voiced complaints for over a decade without taking concrete action to aid taxpayers, such as proposing their own studies or solutions to the federal government. He further states that his own offers to help over nearly seven years were rebuffed.

Mitzner highlighted the presence of highly qualified retired professionals in the Sun Cities, including police chiefs, former Justice Department employees, military security experts with border protection experience, and elected officials. He proposed assembling a volunteer committee to address the issue directly in federal court and achieve a resolution.

He concluded by urging Republicans to form a capable working committee and cease what he described as “hustling” senior citizens.
