One man died and two others were injured in a shooting near the grand opening of a Marathon Burger restaurant in Long Beach, California, on Sunday, March 1, 2026. The shooting occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. In the 200 block of Pine Avenue, approximately a half block from the event perimeter, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Police responded to reports of an altercation and subsequent gunshots emanating from a parking structure. Officers arriving on the scene found one male adult victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Two additional male adults, both in their late teens to early 20s, were also located with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. They were transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
The Marathon Burger location is owned by the family of the late rapper Nipsey Hussle. The grand opening event drew a large crowd and was attended by several celebrities, including Snoop Dogg and YG, though both had departed before the shooting occurred, according to TMZ.
A spokesperson for the Marathon brand stated that the shooting was not connected to the grand opening event, and the restaurant remains open. However, the incident sent bystanders scrambling, according to ABC7.
The Long Beach Police Department’s homicide detectives are investigating the shooting and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The shooting occurred one day after city officials dedicated the intersection of Slauson and Crenshaw as “Nipsey Hussle Square” in honor of the late rapper. The dedication ceremony drew hundreds of fans to South Los Angeles.
