Manipur Visit: Modi Assures Support, Calls for Peace – Live Updates

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking on September 13, 2023, appealed for peace ​in Manipur, emphasizing the critical ⁤need to safeguard the future​ of ⁢the state’s children. His address came‍ amidst ongoing ethnic‍ violence⁣ that has⁤ gripped the region for over⁢ four⁣ months, displacing tens of thousands and raising concerns​ about long-term stability.

The conflict,‍ primarily‌ between the Meitei and Kuki communities,‌ erupted on​ May​ 3, 2023, stemming from disagreements over affirmative action policies ⁤and land rights.The unrest ⁣has resulted in over 180 deaths and left more than 60,000 people displaced, creating a humanitarian crisis and prompting calls for intervention from ​both national and international bodies. Securing a peaceful resolution is paramount not only for restoring‍ normalcy to Manipur but also for ensuring the educational and developmental opportunities of its younger generation, a point underscored by the⁤ Prime Minister’s remarks.”We​ need to restore peace ⁣in Manipur ⁤at ‌the⁣ earliest,” Modi stated​ during a virtual interaction‍ with‍ state ‌officials and representatives of civil society organizations. ⁢he further added, “The future of the children of Manipur is our collective duty.”

The Prime Minister⁤ highlighted the importance of dialog between communities and urged ​all stakeholders to prioritize peace and reconciliation. He also assured ⁤the state government⁤ of the Center’s continued support in resolving the crisis and providing assistance to those affected.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh,present during the interaction,briefed Modi on the steps taken by ‍the ⁣state government to control the violence ‍and restore‌ normalcy. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to finding a peaceful solution through dialogue ⁣and negotiation.

The central ⁢government ​has deployed security‌ forces ​to maintain law and order in the state, and relief camps have been set up⁣ to provide shelter and essential supplies‌ to ⁤the displaced. Though,‌ sporadic incidents of ⁣violence⁤ continue⁣ to be reported, hindering ⁣efforts to restore peace and normalcy.The ‍Prime Minister’s⁣ appeal represents a renewed push for⁣ de-escalation ⁤and a​ return to constructive engagement among ‌all parties involved.
