Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking on September 13, 2023, appealed for peace in Manipur, emphasizing the critical need to safeguard the future of the state’s children. His address came amidst ongoing ethnic violence that has gripped the region for over four months, displacing tens of thousands and raising concerns about long-term stability.
The conflict, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki communities, erupted on May 3, 2023, stemming from disagreements over affirmative action policies and land rights.The unrest has resulted in over 180 deaths and left more than 60,000 people displaced, creating a humanitarian crisis and prompting calls for intervention from both national and international bodies. Securing a peaceful resolution is paramount not only for restoring normalcy to Manipur but also for ensuring the educational and developmental opportunities of its younger generation, a point underscored by the Prime Minister’s remarks.”We need to restore peace in Manipur at the earliest,” Modi stated during a virtual interaction with state officials and representatives of civil society organizations. he further added, “The future of the children of Manipur is our collective duty.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of dialog between communities and urged all stakeholders to prioritize peace and reconciliation. He also assured the state government of the Center’s continued support in resolving the crisis and providing assistance to those affected.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh,present during the interaction,briefed Modi on the steps taken by the state government to control the violence and restore normalcy. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to finding a peaceful solution through dialogue and negotiation.
The central government has deployed security forces to maintain law and order in the state, and relief camps have been set up to provide shelter and essential supplies to the displaced. Though, sporadic incidents of violence continue to be reported, hindering efforts to restore peace and normalcy.The Prime Minister’s appeal represents a renewed push for de-escalation and a return to constructive engagement among all parties involved.
