Mamadou Sarr: Chelsea Return, Strasbourg Loan & Liam Rosenior Reunion

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Chelsea defender Mamadou Sarr has expressed a smooth reintegration into the club following his loan spell with Strasbourg, the 20-year-old centre-back stated in recent comments reported by French media. Sarr, who signed an eight-year contract with Chelsea in June 2025, returned to the London club after playing 15 matches for Strasbourg in the first half of the 2025-2026 season.

The Senegal international highlighted the familiarity he felt upon his return to Chelsea, noting a pre-existing rapport with teammates. “I felt comfortable from the first day. I already knew the team and the guys, so everything went naturally,” Sarr said, according to reports. His move to Chelsea, finalized for a reported €14 million (£11.9m; $14.4m) in January 2025, came with the understanding he would continue his development with Strasbourg, a club also owned by BlueCo, Chelsea’s parent multi-club ownership group.

A significant factor in Sarr’s anticipated smooth transition is the presence of Liam Rosenior, his former manager at Strasbourg, within the Chelsea setup. Rosenior coached Sarr for a season and a half, and the player emphasized the value of their existing relationship. “I know Liam and he knows me. I know how he coaches and prepares for matches. I know him very well and I consider him an excellent coach,” Sarr explained.

Sarr also reflected on his time at Strasbourg, emphasizing the growth he experienced, particularly after being appointed vice-captain. “Playing at Racing [Strasbourg] helped me progress a lot, especially as vice-captain. It was additional responsibility and a real honor. This experience allowed me to mature,” he said. He described a leadership style focused on leading by example, stating a preference for demonstrating rather than simply articulating expectations to teammates.

Prior to joining Chelsea, Sarr progressed through the youth academies of ES Saint-Laurent-Blangy, Lens, and Lyon. He spent the 2023-2024 season on loan at RWD Molenbeek in Belgium before securing a permanent move to Strasbourg. He has also represented France at various youth levels, including the Under-17, Under-18, Under-19, and Under-20 teams, before switching his allegiance to the Senegal national team in 2025, earning four caps as of January 2026. Sarr was part of the Senegal squad that won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Currently valued at €25.00m, Sarr made his debut for Chelsea in 2025 and has made one appearance for the Premier League club as of February 21, 2026. He is expected to compete for playing time with other centre-backs within Enzo Maresca’s squad, and will join the team in the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup.
